Golden Milk Latte with Espresso: A Simple Recipe for a Cozy Morning

As the weather cools and mornings grow a bit slower, there’s nothing quite like a warm, spiced drink to set the tone for the day. One of my personal favorites is the Turmeric Cardamom Latte, a vibrant golden beverage that’s as soothing as it is flavorful. Blending the earthy warmth of turmeric with the floral, slightly citrusy notes of cardamom, this latte is a delightful way to start your day with intention and a touch of creativity. I’ve been obsessed with it for the past month and had to share it with you all!

The Inspiration Behind the Blend

The idea for this latte came from a scroll through TikTok, where I stumbled upon a video about golden milk. At the time, I was dealing with stomach issues and researching soothing remedies. I discovered a wealth of Indian creators sharing their cultural drinks, including golden milk, traditionally known as haldi doodh. This nourishing blend often includes turmeric, milk, black pepper, and sometimes ginger and honey.

Inspired, I tried making it myself and was immediately hooked. The warm, earthy flavors were comforting, and I especially fell in love with the unique taste of cardamom. Wanting to put my own twist on it, I decided to incorporate espresso and tweak the recipe slightly to make it quicker for busy mornings.

Ingredients:

  • 1 shot of espresso (or 1/3 cup strong brewed coffee)

  • 1 cup milk (dairy or plant-based, I use oat milk)

  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric

  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom (freshly ground for best flavor)

  • 1/8 tsp ground ginger (optional, for extra spice)

  • 1-2 pumps of vanilla bean syrup OR 1/2 tsp honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)

  • A pinch of black pepper (to boost turmeric absorption)

Instructions:

  1. Brew your espresso and set it aside.

  2. I have a milk frother, so I put everything in there and set it to create a thick foam. If you don’t have a frother, you can use a small saucepan: gently heat the milk over low-medium heat, stirring in the turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger (if using), sweetner. and black pepper. Heat until steaming but avoid boiling.

  3. Froth the milk to create a creamy foam. For a cappuccino-style, aim for equal parts foam and liquid. If you prefer a true latte, add a bit more milk.

  4. Pour the infused milk over the espresso, holding back the foam with a spoon. Add the foam as a final layer.

  5. Garnish with a pinch of cardamom or cinnamon for a finishing touch.
